The analysis on the professional development of teachers during their work made by the Ministry of Education and Science showed that there is a lack of investments in this area, particularly in comparison with the initial education of teachers. The ongoing training is not compulsary and is restricted, although it is necessary for the teachers to be able to respond to the new challenges in Macedonia.
In response to these challenges, for social cohezion and decreasing poverty, the Government of the Republic of Macedonia is implementing a loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) amounting to USD 5 million, grant amounting to EUR 10 million provided by the Dutch Government and participation of USD 3 million of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia as a contribution in the Education Modernization Project.
The overall objective of the project is to contribute for modernization of education in the Republic of Macedonia.
The project purpose is to promote the quality of the lectures and to increase the participation in the target schools. One of the project components is capacity building and professional development of teachers in the primary and secondary schools.
In 2006, the Project Coordination Unit within the Ministry of Education and Science released a Catalogue of training providers and their programs for teachers’ training, including the topics, curricula, contents and price. The schools, depending on the needs and the amount of the grant provided by the Ministry of Education and Science, select a topic and training provider to deliver the training to their teachers. After the selection, the providers sign contract with the Ministry, specifying the details regarding the training delivery. In 2007/2008 MCIC has signed contract with the Ministry for delivering one training on communication skills for the primary school “Hristijan Todorovski Karpoš”, Skopje. Total of seven teachers and other school staff will attend the training.
Implementation period: May 1 – December 31, 2008.
Budget: 96,030 MKD (direct costs).
